There are various types of open cell foams, they include:
- Polyester
- Polyether Polyurethane
- Low Permeability
- Polyimide
- Melamine
Open cell foams can be formulated to feel very soft and pliable to very firm and board like or even hydrophilic.
Open Cell Foam Uses
They are used in a variety of markets including:
- Furniture and Bedding
- Automotive
- Appliance
- Medical
- Electronics
- Packaging
- Military
- Sporting Goods
We have the ability to densify full sized sheets of Solimide® Polimide in our
heat press to achieve a higher density and more rigid product.
The heat press allows us to apply a reinforced aluminum foil to the surface of many open-cell foams for use in insulation applications or where surface protection or a wipable surface is required.
We can also add an adhesive back or facing to with our heat press.
We apply facing, backing or foil to:
- Polyester Polyurethane
- Polyether Polyurethane
- Low Permeability Foam
- Solimide® Polyimide
- Basotect® Melamine

Polyester Polyurethane
Is open cell, non-reticulated flexible foam. It is available in a density range from 1.5 to 6 pound/ cu ft, with or without a fire retardant additive. The fire retardant version meets UL 94 HF-1.

Polyester
Uses include cushion packaging,
acoustical enclosures, light shields, X-ray positioning pads, low pressure gaskets, case lining, and anti-rattle.
Polyester polyurethane is easy to fabricate and can be supplied as fabricated parts, rolls or sheets.
Polyether Polyurethane
An open cell, non-reticulated flexible foam. It is available in a variety of densities and firmnesses. Densities range from 1 pound / cu ft to 5.5 pounds / cu ft.

Polyether
The applications for this material are the same as above. For high volume applications, typically truck load quantities, rolls may also be available.
Low Permeability Foam
Is a unique open cell foam that has a high degree of window membranes intact that make it ideal as a low pressure gasket.

LP Foam
LP Foam has a low air and vapor permeability that that can be ideal for many applications requiring low pressure gasketing such as air duct damper gaskets and dust and vapor seals for automotive, appliances and data processing equipment.
Pyrell
Pyrell foam is an effective fire retardant, flexible polyester polyurethane foam. It has passed the most stringent and demanding tests - both vertical and horizontal - for fire retardant effectiveness.

Pyrell
It has been tested and approved by the Underwriters' Laboratories and is available in 2 to 4 pounds per cubic foot density. Uses include sound absorption and gasketing.
Solimide® Polyimide
Is a light weight, non-burning, non-fibrous insulation foam manufactured by Inspec Foams. Solimide® polyimide foams are inherently fire resistant and emit virtually no smoke or incapacitating toxic byproduct when exposed to open flame. No halogens, heavy metals or ozone depleting chemicals are used in manufacture.

Solimide® TA-301
Polyimide performs over a wide temperature operating range. It remains flexible from +575 F to -320 F.
There are four grades of Solimide® available TA-301, AC-550, AC-530 and HT-340. All are available in a 48" x 96" sheets or cut
to your specific size. Stephenson & Lawyer currently stocks TA-301, AC-550 and HT-340.
Basotect® Melamine
Melamine foam also known as Basotect® is manufactured by BASF. Basotect is a flexible, open cell foam made from melamine resin, a thermoset plastic from the aminoplastics group. Its
characteristic feature is its delicate three dimensional filigree network structure formed from slender and hence readily thermoformable filaments.

Basotect
The standard sheet size is 49.2" x 98.4". It can be cut to your specific part size or provided in sheets at your desired thickness.
Omalon®
Omalon is a foam cushioning material produced from a patented process which yields a high density, unfilled, homogeneous foam with a unique, angular, fine cell structure.

Omalon®
Applications include furniture, bedding, protective athletic padding and orthopedic soft goods.
